Portfolio Book Design Guide

In this section, we show you how to create a design file that will be used to produce your custom portfolio case. This step-by-step guide will take you through how to set up your file for the three different treatments: engravings, a cut-out, and a vinyl decal.

We’ve also included a checklist for you to review before you submit your design. Happy creating!

Preparing your Vector Files

The following are some guidelines for creating vector based artwork.

  • Convert all text to outlines
  • Check that all line thicknesses meet the minimum requirements
  • Check that your logo or design is a vector shape

Setting up your design file for an Engraving

Step 1.

Create your logo or design as vector shape and save it as an EPS file. If you have already done this, you’re almost done!

Step 2.

Next you’ll want to make changes to your design based on our legend. Use black to outline or fill for what you’d like engraved. Take a look at the example below.

The color of the line you draw determines what the laser cutter/engraver will do.
For example, if you draw a flower with a black outline, the laser will only engrave the outline. If you fill your flower with black, the laser engraver will engrave everything that is black.

Step 3.

Before saving, check your final design against our checklist. You’re almost done! Upload your file to the Build It page and check out.

  • All lines are outlines only and have not been filled with white
  • Lines do not overlap, double-up, or cross.
  • Treatment effects are submitted in the correct color
  • Any text submitted has been “Created as outlines”
  • All your design fits in within the “Safe Area”

Setting up your design file for a Cut-out

Step 1.

Create your logo or design as vector shape and save it as an EPS file. If you have already done this, you’re almost done!

Step 2.

Next you’ll want to make changes to your design based on our legend. Use a blue outline for what you’d like cut out. Take a look at the example below.

Outlining this design in blue means that the laser cutter/engraver will cut out the flower.

Step 3.

Before saving, check your final design against our checklist. You’re almost done! Upload your file to the Build It page and check out.

  • All lines are outlines only and have not been filled with white
  • Lines do not overlap, double-up, or cross
  • Treatment effects are submitted in the correct color
  • Any text submitted has been “Created as outlines”
  • All your design fits in within the “Safe Area”

Setting up your design file for a Vinyl Decal

Step 1.

Create your logo or design as vector shape and save it as an EPS file. If you have already done this, you’re almost done!

Step 2.

Next you’ll want to make changes to your design based on our legend. Use a red fill to outline what you’d like made into a vinyl decal. Take a look at the example below.

Outlining this design in red means that the flower will be created as a vinyl decal.

Step 3.

Before saving, check your final design against our checklist. You’re almost done! Upload your file to the Build It page and check out.

  • All lines are outlines only and have not been filled with white
  • Lines do not overlap, double up, or cross
  • Treatment effects are submitted in the correct color
  • Any text submitted has been “Created as outlines”
  • All your design fits in within the “Safe Area”

Setting up your file for more than one type of treatment

If your design includes more than one treatment (for example your name as an engraving and your logo cut out) use the legend to illustrate what you’d like done. Additional charges may apply.
