We often get asked “How do I insert pages in to a screwpost portfolio book?” There are a few ways which we’ll discuss below and the pros and cons of each.
Hinge strips are made from a clear-flexi material and attach to the left hand side of your work and have holes that align with the holes of the binding. Your pages will bend properly and lie flat and you won’t need to worry about creating margins or a gutter for your printed pages.
PRO: Because this portion is clear, it’s not intrusive on your work and will flow nicely with your artwork. It looks very professional and streamlines your pages. They’re very easy to attach and look great.
CON: Because the adhesive portion of the hinge strip, it’s meant to be used on a single page so it’s not reusable although they are reasonably priced.
We do sell them for $13.95 for a pack of 10 so you can let us know if you need any of these with your order when you build your own custom portfolio book.
If you plan on switching the content of your screwpost portfolio book often, this may be the best option for you.
PRO: Sheet protectors allow you to easily slip your pages in to them and have a perforated area as well as holes that line up with the holes on the binding of your portfolio book. They’ll keep your pages from fingerprint marks and other dirt blemishes that can appear after handling.
CON: Because it’s essentially a plastic cover over your pages, it may cause glare over your work and feel less natural for the viewer since they’re not able to directly feel the weight and texture of the paper you’ve used. Sometimes it can be related to “scrapbook” qualities which are not as professional as other options.
We don’t sell sheet protectors but you can buy them at your local art store or online at sites like Amazon.com
Scored and Hole Punched Printed Pages
A third option is to have your pages scored and hole punched by your printer when sending them to press. You’ll want to make sure you leave a 1″ margin on the left hand side of your prints to allow for the area that will go in to the binding of your screwpost portfolio.
PRO: Your pages will appear uniform and well structured with the perforation and aligned hole spacing.
CON: Not all printers offer this service and if they do, it may be more costly than using hinge strips or sheet protectors. In addition, this option will work best with heavier weight paper or cardstock since perforation can wear on thinner paper and tear.

We recently had the pleasure of creating a custom portfolio book for Illustrator and Designer Anthony Foronda who has graced the pages of The Washington Post, Red Herring Financial Magazine, St. Petersburg Times, and National Public Radio.
He has been recognized in The Society of Illustrators of Los Angeles Illustration 43, 45, and 48 as well as a Third Place Award in the 2005 Alternative Pick Awards . Last year he had 5 works selected in the Lurzer’s Archive of Illustration’s 200 Best Illustrators Worldwide. He has taught at Ringling School of Art and is in the Art Institute’s online curriculum for multimedia graphics.
Anthony wanted a custom engraved portfolio book which incorporated his branding, a bit of color, and a lot of wow-factor. He chose our caramel bamboo material with both front and back cover engravings.
The Solution: Klo Portfolios created a custom 8.5 x 11 caramel bamboo portfolio book with engraving and vinyl decal treatments. The subtle amount of red vinyl and his custom logo engraving on the cover perfectly compliments the over-sized back engraving which is eye catching and unexpected.
All of Klo Portfolios custom presentation books like Anthony’s, are cut-to order, treated, and hand assembled in our Vancouver studio. Each piece passes through multiple hands before its final destination. If you have a unique custom portfolio book idea, chances are we can bring it to life.
You can see a few examples of Anthony’s work below. Visit his website for his complete portfolio.
Kevin Liu, a dedicated designer from Charlotte, NC specializes in modern, abstract, and minimal 3D design. Driven by his love of packaging design and light photography, he was propelled to go back to school. Kevin feels an overall sense of calm and fulfillment when designing which is completely in congruence with what he wants to do: create.
Kevin came to Klo Portfolios and wanting a custom portfolio book that embodied his minimalist yet sharp design aesthetic. Looking for something that captures his simple yet crystal clear aesthetic, he was naturally attracted to the white acrylic portfolio books.
The Solution: We created a custom-cut 11 x 17 white acrylic graphic design portfolio with die-cut treatment on the cover. This allows Kevin to visually play with the first page of his portfolio to make certain patterns and colors pop through.
All Klo custom portfolios are cut and treated when they’re ordered, and hand assembled in our Vancouver studio. You can’t get much fresher than then. Our philosophy is waste not want not which is why we aim to have minimum wastage with maximum freshness.
