Read on to learn everything you need to know about screwpost portfolios.
What is a Screwpost Portfolio?
A screwpost portfolio is comprised of 2 hard covers and hinged binding that allow you to easily add and remove pages. This is especially advantageous because you can use your portfolio book for years to come, updating your work as often as you like. Your work will be kept new and relevant and you can switch our prints to show prospective clients and potential employers a tailored view of your work.
How are Pages Added to a Screwpost Portfolio?
The two most popular methods of adding pages to your screwpost portfolio are with hinge strips or sheet protectors. Watch our quick video tutorial to see how it's done using both methods.
A third method involves leaving a 1" margin on the left hand of your prints, scoring and hole punching the pages. All methods get the job done so it's a matter of personal preference which you choose. Hinge strips are great because there is no plastic over the pages. Some people prefer sheet protectors if they want to to be able to easily switch out the pages later on.
What are the Benefits of Using a Screwpost Portfolio?
Tailoring Your Work
One of the most obvious benefits is the ability to change and update your work whenever you like. Unlike a book that's bound permanently, you're free to update your portfolio book as often as you need to. This gives you the ability to tailor your work for each interview or prospective client so you're always presenting work that most aligns with what they're looking for.
A beautifully printed custom portfolio book is tangible and allows you to stand out in the mind of the viewer. You can present your body of work in the physical form and escape the illuminated ipad or laptop screen if just for a few minutes. It allows you to connect with the prospective client through touch and the feel of the paper.
A beautifully made custom portfolio book allows you to stand out from the hundreds of other photographers, graphic designers, or interior designers vying for a position or project. While others may bring an ipad or a few promotional cards, you have the opportunity to present your branding and personal style in a new way.
Being able to present printed pages a potential client can flip through offers a chance to build a more in-depth connection. There is power in the tangible and it's much more likely that the viewer will make a connection if they are flipping through physical prints. It also shows them your ability to arrange and properly print your body of work as a cohesive collection.
Use it for Years to Come
Through your career, your style will inevitably evolve. A screwpost portfolio allows you to add and remove pages easily so you can update your work when you're ready to. Out with the old and in with the new! Update your portfolio book with new work whenever you like. Have you rebranded completely? Our portfolio books are fabricated in such a way that the cover can easily be replaced with new customization at a later date.
What Size Portfolio Book Do I Get?
Our custom portfolios are named after the page size they hold. For example, an 11" x 14" landscape portfolio will hold 11" x 14" prints. The portfolio books are themselves a bit larger to perfectly accommodate the page size they're named after and take in to account the use of hinge strips or sheet protectors.
The size of your portfolio will depend on a few factors such as how travel friendly you'd like it to be, how large you'd like your prints displayed in, and industry standards. For example, if you plan on taking your portfolio book to various appointments or traveling with it, we recommend 8.5" x 11" or 11" x 14" sizes. On the other hand, if printing your work at a larger size is important to you, or you plan on keeping your portfolio book in your home office or studio, we recommend our 11" x 17" size or larger.
It's all about personal preference and what's important to you. You can't go wrong as long as you're considering your own needs and what works best for you.
